Speech Competition - English Winner

Shar was the winner of the Senior Syndciate speech competition (in English) last week.  He went on to compete in the inter school competition and came 2nd overall.  It was a tremendous effort!  In our school competition, Logan came 2nd and Renei came 3rd.

Speech Competition - Te Reo Maori Winner

Congratulations to Leonie who won the Te Reo Maori section of the speech competition last week.  Hinemaurea came 2nd and Te AoTawarirangi came 3rd.  All of the winners were from Room 3.   

Art Exhibition 2009

Last week, Kelvin Road School held its annual Art Exhibition. All the classes contributed to the show and loved seeing their art work on display. Parents and other friends of the school came in to view the displays. The teachers have been saving the best art all year waiting for this opportunity to share it with everyone.

More examples will be shared later! Keep an eye out for them.....or you can wait until the same time next year and come and see our new exhibition.

A Story From the Papakura Courier

EVERY PENNY COUNTS: Students from Kelvin Road School’s Maori bilingual unit created a coin trail poster for children in Samoa.

Instead of writing stories about what they did in the holidays students in Kelvin Road School’s Maori bilingual unit asked if they could use the time to do something for children in Samoa affected by the tsunami. After a brainstorming session they decided to make a coin trail poster and send it to Samoa. Teacher Rachael Taylor says a lot of the children had seen coverage of the tsunami on the news and really wanted to do something to help.

So they spent three days asking friends, teachers and parents for any spare change – be it 10 cents or $2. With the help of kaiawhina (teacher aide) Ripeka Croft they also created a giant poster filled with bright images of Samoa – from an umu to coconut trees and jandals – and heartfelt messages of support. After sticking the $60 in coins down the poster weighed as much as a hard-backed dictionary. Mrs Taylor says the children really enjoyed making the poster and wanted to take it to Samoa themselves.

Failing that they hope the money is used to buy schoolchildren pens, pencils, rulers and rubbers.
In a note the class has attached to the bottom of the poster they write: "We want to give something special back to the children as we are fortunate enough to have a classroom with lots of resources and equipment."

Mrs Taylor hopes the Red Cross will be able to get the poster to Samoa on behalf of the school and the youngsters who created it.

Britomart Field Trip - Room 14 and Room 17

Room 17 and Room 14 went on thier train trip to Britomart on Friday the 21st of August. This video is a collection of images from that trip. Our thanks go to Garry who shot and compiled the video.

Summer Sports day 2009

Wednesday 25th March 2009 dawned clear and chilly. It was the day nearly 60 very excited senior school pupils were to represent KRS at the North Counties inter-school summer sports day. The event was held at Ray Small Park and Prince Edward Park in Papakura. There were 2 touch teams lead. The year 5 team won all of the games they played. The Year 6 team had some tough matches but they played hard and fair. Whaea Elaine and her parent helpers were very proud of both teams’ efforts.

The softballers’ won 5 of their 7 matches. They were the only team who beat the team from Cosgrove, who were the overall winners. The team played with excellent sportsman ship and with courage. Ngaio slid into home plate with commitment and flair. Her team mates celebrated her 12 point run. Regan hit a massive almost 13 point run against the winning team. Mrs. K. Smith was ecstatic with the softball team’s achievement.

Mr. Naidoo took 16 very able cricketers. They were up against some tough competition. They played as a team and this allowed them to triumph over some other teams.

The teachers and parents who attended the sports day were very proud of the behaviour and sportsmanship of all of the students. Everybody had a blast!
