Taekwon-Do

Every Friday we go to Taekwon-Do it’s a type of martial art. The first thing we did was to show respect by saying, “Yes Sir” or “Yes Ma’am”. Next we learnt how to stand in positions and bow. Then we did punching, we punched high, middle and low. Then we practised punching with a step.

After that we did a kick they told us to bend our toes back or we would have sore feet. We did kicking and stepping. Then we got to kick the thick pads held by Sir and Ma’am.

They made us learn the five tenets. They are courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. I cannot wait until next Friday to learn even more Taekwon-Do.

Room 8 learns Taekwon-Do

On Friday 10^th of February Room 8 did Taekwon-Do. We learned some really cool stuff, like punching. Mr Pellow and his helper were good at all of them. We also learnt how to do kicks. We had to kick the pad. It was hard for me to do the kick, but I will try my best to do it next time.

Then we were taught how to do push-ups. I did not like the push-ups because we could not do girl push-ups. All of us had to do the boy push-ups, it was really hard. We learnt to punch high, in the middle and low down. Mr Pellow showed us how to break out of a wrist hold too.

Mr Pellow taught us the five tenets of Taekwon-Do:

I really enjoyed the Taekwon-Do lessons. I can’t wait until next Friday to learn some more.

Junior School Playground Gets A Make Over

Playground

2012 was not just a new start to learning at Kelvin Road School but also a new start for the Junior Playground, which saw a $35,000 make over to revamp it and a new improved Junior Environmental Garden that cost $7,000.

We decided to improve the Junior Playground as it would cost us $6,000 just to re-bark it – this new material does not require “refilling” and will last for many, many years.

It’s important that our children remain safe at school, and we reduce the bumps, bruises and breaks where we can. J

We are sure the children will enjoy it!!!

The junior environmental garden is there to become established, and have lots of wee insects and creatures the children can look at and learn from.

It will present an ideal place to:

· Learn;

· Sit and read;

· Have quiet time;

· Have fun;

· Listen to stories.

It is, of course, open to all of our children, seniors with a teacher during school hours, and juniors all of the time J

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A WORM

Hi! I’m jeffery. I like to squirm all around this worm farm minding my own business looking for yummy things to squirm into and eat. Hey! What’s that I smell, nff, nff… a great big, tasty sandwich, for me? Ohh! I’m just a few wriggles away, oh no! Another worm! I better get there quickly. I hear him munching my tasty meal. Hold on… it’s just a spider on the roof eating a juicy fly. Well, if I don’t get started soon I’ll miss my meal and a hungry worm is not a happy worm. Munch, munch, munch. Mmmhhhuumm… that was so tasty and yummy.

Uuhhh oo, I hear stomping, boom! Boom! Boom! Aaaaaaaaawwwwwweeeee! Stop, that sun is burning hot on my skin, close that lid! Close it now! What were those silly humans thinking, don't they know that I don't like the sun on my skin...I heard Room 23 practising sun safety, I know all about keeping out of the sun. Down into the soil I go, aahhhh, that’s better….niff, niff, niff-ooo! More food. Gosh I’m a hungry worm but now you'll have to excuse me, I got to do something, plop, plop, plop, ahhhh that’s much better. I’ve just created new healthy soil. Now, i can continue eating. It’s like I’m the king of worms… and food!

Interviewing Mrs Weir

Today we interviewed a very important person, Mrs Weir. She is Mr Robertson’s secretary so we don’t get to see her very much but she is such so important in our school.

This is what she said:

How has your day been?

“Fantastic but busy.” Mrs Weir does all Mr Robertson's work, no wonder we don't see her much.

What do you like about being a secretary?

“I like that my job gives me a lot of varieties.” Things Mrs Weir does is the computer work, notes, news letters, phone calls and all the things Mr Robertson needs her to do.

What do you like to do when you are not at school?

“I love to read and I read every day.” No wonder Mrs Weir is a secretary, she must be so smart from all that reading!

When did you start at this school?

“January 2006.” Wow! That is such a long time, we were only 4. We hadn't even started school by then!

Are you always happy and why?

“I’m always happy at work because it is better to be happy than being sad and I have lovely friends at work.” I think that is great, being happy is so important.

Mrs Weir does so much for the kids at Kelvin Road School and we want to say a BIG thank you.

Teachers Versus the Seniors

Seniors find a hole in the teacher's defences!

On Wednesday the 5^th of October the teachers of Kelvin Road School got together to challenge the year 6 seniors at playing a game of soccer. The game was awesome, especially the teachers because they had a lot of team work happening. When one teacher headed the ball, Mr Robertson kicked the ball into the goal and that was their first goal. Then it was half time. It was good because they tried their best and got 2 goals. Many people wanted to join in because it looked like so much fun. Every one was shouting and screaming for the teachers and the Years 6s. The final score was a 2 all draw. In an after match interview with the senior school coach, Mrs K Smith, she had this to say, “It was very exciting and the team did very well. I’m so proud of them.”

We were unable to interview the teachers after their match because they needed to catch their breaths.

Seniors kept up the attack and scored two
excellent goals.

Mr Naidoo recovers from sevral good attacks at goal by the year 6s but there was no way the ball was getting into his goal.

Room 21 Learns to use Imagery in Numeracy

On Friday the 30^th September kiara and Ariana, news team, went to room 21 to find news about the hard work going on around our school. We caught Room21 doing maths, they were putting the biggest numbers in their head, instead of using counters (imagery). They were very brave to answer such hard equations like 7+8, 13-6, and 6+7.Brooklyn Manuel said, “Maths is fun.”

Students Learn about the Rugby World Cup

This week, room 7 was learning about the Rugby World Cup. Some were learning how to label and choose the right colours for each flag of the different countries playing rugby. “For our flags we have to choose the right colours and label the meanings of for them,” mentioned Manaia. Cameron was designing a new T-shirt for his adopted country Romania and had finished designing a new All Blacks T-shirt. Others like Mercedes, Mavis and Tatiana were working on their cultural wheel. “In our cultural wheel we are writing about our own culture,” Tatiana claimed. Room 7 were doing their topic on the Rugby World Cup. Room 7 enjoyed their topic. Well done Room 7!

Room 11 Make Fire Figher Costumes and Masks

This term the Junior School have been learning about people who keep us safe. Room 11 have been working on their own stuff. They have been making fire fighter costumes and masks. Anni and I, Hineula, have been taking photographs of them working on their art and they told us lots of information about keeping safe. Here Holden Oti, Serraphina Sua, Selina Mahani, Katelyn Sinclair, Letisha Anderson, Blade Tiki, Pauline Kaulave, Gabriel Daniel, Deprey Walu, Trinity Marechal, Faith Walker and Renato Teokotai show off their masks.

Speech Finals 2011

The Senior School Speech Finals were held on Friday with exceptional performances presented by the senior students. Each speech radiated both pride and confidence as they competed in their efforts to persuades their audience. The speeches were delivered in both English and Maori to such a high standard that judging was deemed very difficult. A special thank you to the guest judges who had the difficult job of selecting first, second and third for each unit.

Volcanic Eruptions

Room 14 have been studying volcanoes this term and put their knowledge to the test in the Kelvin Road School sandpit. They used vinegar and soda to create several types of life like eruptions. Luckily, the 50 volcanoes under Auckland are extinct, thought Miss Taffard, as she saw the 25 eruptions made by her class and the mess left behind.

On Thursday the 25th of August Kelvin Road Scool were treated to an audience with Katz Cowley and Ruth Paul the illustrators of many childrens' much loved stories. Katz explained how she came up with her ideas for the pictures in her first book, Wonkey Donkey. "I was walking down the road and a I saw a donkey, EEA AWW!" laughed Katz as she told us her favourite story. She later taught us her secrets and tricks for drawing her pictures. We even learnt how to draw happy and sad faces just from a circle!

Ruth showed us her doodles and sketches for some of her books, Stomp, The Animal Undie Ball, The Little White Lie and everyones favourite, The Kings Bubbles. It took her a long time to get her pictures just right.

Thank you for coming to our school, it was great listening to your stories.

How Many Children Fit into a Square Metre?

Mr McMillan set a challenge for Room 23. He asked how many people can they fit standing inside a square metre.

Room 23 thought the answer might be 3. Mr McMillan said "Are you serious?" Room 23 said "Yes, definitely 3."

After some gentle manoeuvring, they discovered the could fit 22 people inside a square metre, (the small ones are squashed at the back which is why you can't see 22 people).

Mrs Dunbar and Mr McMillan were both in as well. Mrs Dunbar counted as 2 people because she is quite big for a Room 23 pupil and Mr McMillan, (who is taking the photo), counted as 3.

Yummy Sandwiches in Room 22

Room 22 have been learning to write instructions for procedural writing. On Tuesday they made a delicious sandwich, then wrote the ingredients and instructions for you to make your own sandwich at home!

Room 22’s 'Cruncheon Sausage Sandwich'

Here is the procedure to make your own yummy sandwiches!

Room 22’s Cruncheon Sausage Sandwich

Ingredients:

-bread -tomato sauce -potato chips -luncheon sausage

-a knife -a plate

Instructions

1. Wash hands

2. Take 2 pieces of bread and put on a plate.

3. Put a tomato sauce swirl on one side of one piece of bread.

4. Get some chips and put on the sauce.

5. Put 2 pieces of luncheon sausage on the chips.

6. Put another sauce swirl on the luncheon sausage.

7. Put the other piece of bread on top.

8. Carefully cut with knife however you please.

9. EAT!!!

All White Giving Something Back

All Whites winger Leo Bertos was keen to step in when he heard about a plan to promote football among Maori and Pacific Island children. And that's what he was doing in south Auckland last week – kicking about with some football-crazed kids from Kelvin Road Primary School in Papakura.

Bertos was encouraged to join the Coerver Coaching New Zealand development programme by technical director and head coach Phil Parker who was staying in the same camp as the All Whites during the FIFA Football World Cup in South Africa last year.

"I caught up with Phil after the tournament and got a chance to find out what this was all about. As soon as he explained it to me, I was hooked," Bertos says.

"It was the right time for me to think about giving something back to the community and what Phil's doing is something I wanted to be a part of." Bertos signed a contract with Coerver Coaching's official partner adidas last year and is now the academy's ambassador.

While he can't be at all the training sessions Phil holds throughout south Auckland, he holds sessions in Papatoetoe and Mangere. The kids were certainly lapping up what time they did have with the international star.

"A lot of the kids actually recognise me and they look up to me which is great so it's nice for them to be close," Bertos says. "This kind of thing makes it a bit more real for them and for me too. I had a coach that did something similar with the same training principles and methods that Phil is using and I truly believe that if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have got to where I am today. This is where it all starts."

Parker, a former national football rep, says selling the sport to Maori and Pacific Island children is not difficult. "It's very easy because it's still quite a unique sport to them. It's not a mainstream sport for Maori and Pacific Island kids but even the kids you would least expect are really loving it."

Parker coaches about 35 children at Kelvin Rd Primary School and after two training sessions during the week the kids put their skills into practice playing for local football clubs at the weekend. Parker says as well as teaching the children the fundamentals of good ball skills and sportsmanship, the programme helps build relationships between the community and local clubs.

Room 14 have been working hard in term one to create amazing pieces of art for their classroom.

During assembly, the whole school had a spectacular display of colours that were created using a variety of techniques.

Petra explained the blending process used to create her name plates using vibrant colours and a steady hand.

Below, Brooke described the lines and shading they used to create these portraits. They took a long time to make but it was all well worth it. They had to use a combination of charcoal and pencil to make all the details stand out.

Jessica excitedly showed off their contrasting patterns. These were made using shading and contrast. Can you see the sections of bright colour? They look fantastic on Room 14's wall!

Finally, Winter showed off the art she had been working on recently, block art. We liked making these because we got to cut out lots off different colours and overlap them on our paper.

Fantastic work Room 14! I can't wait until our next visit to your room!

Ukulele Musical

EXPLORING CULTURES: Pupils and teachers from Kelvin Rd Primary School dressed in the traditional Indian, Samoan and Maori dress.

Children from Kelvin Rd Primary School have ended their Exploring Cultures unit last week topping it off with a performance from Samoa.

After visiting a marae to explore Maori culture, and a temple to learn more about Indian culture, the students were treated to traditional siva by taupau Leabroune Leuo and a comedic insight into the Samoan culture by local personality Willie Iosia. who spoke about the importance of religion and family.

In celebration of the last leg of the unit, people dressed in the traditional costume of each culture.

Room 2 and 6 fundraised for the Junior School Trip to Kelly Taltons in Term 2. We fundraised an Easter Hamper which PAPAKURA NEW WORLD kindly donated to us. The raffle tickets were drawn in assembly by Kym Samuels from Papakura New World. We sold 278 tickets and John from Room 9 was the lucky winner! Miriama, Georena and Dhay-Sharne work on a word puzzle to see how many words they can find in 4 minutes.

Today, in Room 23, we were learning about being smart. I found out that there are 8 ways to be smart. They are number smart, word smart, people smart, body smart, art smart, self smart, music smart and nature smart. We did some number smart puzzles and some word puzzles. I think I am word smart because I talk alot and know lots of words. My teacher calls me a lexicon because I am like a dictionary. Here is a picture of me and my group doing a word game (above).

Bubble Blowing

Kelvin Road School started back at school last week and saw Room 2 looking for inspiration for their visual arts paintings using bubble blowing.

We blew bubbles for inspiration during Art, and looked at all the different colours the bubbles could be.

We then made our own bubbles on paper with different coloured dye and dishwashing liquid. We had lots of fun.

Way to go Room 2! I can't wait to see pictures of your bubble painting.

Christmas Tree Reindeers

In Room 23 Hineula and Leighton made Christmas reindeers for the Christmas tree by following a procedure. "We've been practising writing procedures this term, so it was fun to finally use one to make these cool reindeer".

Tree Reindeers

Goal:

No Christmas tree is complete until it has a reindeer, with his shiny red nose, sitting in the branches. Follow these simple steps to make your own.

Materials:

3 Dolly pegs per reindeer

Hot gun with glue

Red or green felt

Eyes

Red sponge for nose

Ribbon

Marker pen

scissors

Steps:

1. Get out 3 dolly pegs and draw on the hooves on two pegs with a marker pen.

2. Two pegs to hang down and one turned upside down to make a face with antlers.

3. Use a glue gun to glue the pegs together.

4. Cut out a small square as a saddle and use glue gun to stick in place.

5. Get two eyes and glue under the antlers.

6. Stick on red sponge nose under the eyes.

7. Cut a small amount of ribbon and tie on.

The Butterfly and the Bird

A butterfly was flying away from the bird because the bird was going to eat the little butterfly. Then the cat came to eat the bird but the bird was too fast. Then the cat had an idea. She opened her mouth and waited for a bird to go in her mouth. Then one bird nearly went inside her mouth then the cat jumped up and ate the bird who had come in her mouth. Then the tiger ran fast as he could then he ate the cat.

Three said to them, “Can you play with me?” But Ten and One said nothing because they were bad. So Three went to a zoo and Six and Nine were there. Six and Nine said to Three, “What are you doing here at the zoo?” Three said, “I`m looking for some friends.” Six said, “ Yes, we can be your friends.” So Nine, Six and Three went walking down the road and they found Ten One again. Six, Nine and Three said to them, “Can you be our friends now? “Yes,” said One and Ten. They went to Three`s house and played together then they had some lunch. Then Nine, Six, Ten and one went back to the zoo and had a play together. Then they went to sleep. The next morning, Three came to the zoo. Three said to Six and Nine, “Come.” They said, “No.” So Three cried all the way home. He called his mother. She came and stayed with him for 4 weeks.

Flower Gardens

Room 12 have been taking advantage of the lovely warm days with their teacher Mrs Fruean and begun planting ready for the summer. First the children helped dig out the weeds and the chip packets that liked to grow there. Next they turned over the soil and chose their potted plants. It was hard work but well worth it. They didn't even forget to tidy up after all their planting. The garden looks great! Don't forget to water them everyday.

Room 22 Brightens Up Statistics

Room 22 were studying Statistics for math. We had been drawing bar graphs, so we decided to make a bar graph of all the names in the class.

As you can see from the photos first we got different coloured paper and put one letter of our name on each piece. Then starting with the smallest number of letters, we began to make our bar graph. You can see some of us looking at the graph and talking about what we could tell by our graph. There were 7 people who had a 6 letter name, the shortest name was only 4 letters and the longest name was 10 letters long! We discussed our graph and decided that we could also make a graph of the most popular letters, and the most popular coloured paper.

The 'Wizards' reading group from Room 22 tested the jobs of their tongue and teeth while reading the book 'Inside Your Mouth'. Here you can see them experimenting with Weet-bix, testing what saliva does when we eat. We also tried some banana to see what our tongues do and some apple to test out our teeth and the different chewing surfaces. The Wizards really enjoyed learning about and exploring the parts of their mouths. The groups verdict.....

Iron Brion

Kelvin Road School had an entertaining visit from Iron Brion who taught us about eating healthy and important vitamins such as Iron. Iron carries oxygen around the body, helps make energy from foods and fights infection. Iron is also used for growth and development and is involved with helping us learn.
Beef and lamb are packed full of many important vitamins and minerals and make an important contribution to the healthy, balanced diet of all Kiwi kids. We learnt about the important food groups and how they help us to grow and learn. After a fun packed show we all had our own iron filled burger for lunch. Thank you Iron Brion!

I love my character because her voice is like music to my ears. She has short grey hair that hangs down to her shoulders and reminds me of silver wire. It matches her long grey cloak. She sometimes wears shiny round glasses so she can see her paintings more clearly. Her paintings are fabulous, like masterpieces at the museum. Her light blue eyes shine like night time stars and sparkle when she smiles at me. Her laugh makes me smile and I laugh too.

Kelvin Road Celebrates Book Week

This week, Kelvin Road School has been promoting reading through a variety of activities, which ended with a book character parade on Friday. Niva Retimanu opened Book Week on Monday with her favourite story 'Kiss! Kiss! Yuck! Yuck! We also had David Kemeys- the chief editor of Sunday Star and Lyn Kriegler an illustrator and author who taught us how she creates her stories using puppets and lots of imagination.

During the week, children read as many books as they could so that they could add a reading block to the book wall to create a collage of favourite stories. Some of the cool activities included making book marks, entering poster competitions, quiz and library hunt and entertainment with Starfish.
The parade was a fantastic event, which saw favourite book characters brought to life on stage. Willie Iosa came to talk with many of the characters and enjoy the last day of our book week fun.

Variety Bash Visits Kelvin Road School

Today the Variety Bash came to Kelvin Road School to raise money for The Children's Charity, which is dedicated to helping sick, disadvantaged and disabled children around the world. The very unique Variety Bash laid out a mad-cap adventure full of eccentric vehicles, unusual characters and heart-felt generosity. The Variety Bash travels hundreds of kilometres every year raising funds, distributing grants and telling the Variety story.

During their visit to Kelvin Road, the team at Variety Bash handed out 6 brand new bikes to 6 hard working children; Angelina Kaulave, Patrick Snell, Tyson Angell, Dhay-Sharnah Harris, TeManapouri Wera, Hine Maurea Pahina

The Children's Charity is the fun way to help Kiwi kids. Variety is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary in New Zealand. Since 1989, Variety has distributed more than $11.7 million to Kiwi kids in need.

Wednesday the 4th of August

How to get solids from a liquid.

Today Mrs Dunbar dissolved salt into hot water and stirred it around until all the salt was gone. Then she boiled up the liquid in a kettle. Soon the vapour came out as steam and hit the ceiling. The water in the jug went down and left the salt behind. We think that because the salt is a solid it is too heavy to float up with the water vapour.

On the last Thursday of the term, the Senior Syndicate held their poetry recital finals. The finals were the result of every pupil in the Senior School memorising and presenting a poem of their choice. Of the finalists, 20 were presented in English and 3 were in Maori. England Bows Down to Serbia in Soccer Semi Finals

Yesterday we were Serbia and the other team was England in soccer. Me and Phillip got a score and we got two points and we won and we said good game. Folototo and Miniah and Harmony and Nesha and Angeline cheered for us and we are in the finals. We will vs. Room 15 on Friday. I think we will win!

Yesterday, at the school assembly, Room 23 shared their presentation on Argentina (their adopted country for the Football World Cup). They cheered, they yelled and they blew us away with their knowledge. Not only that, they followed up this with a good victory at lunch time. Their team chant goes like this:

Today Sain and Gabriel went to the zoo with their class. Their 'parent helper' was Mr McMillan. One of the first things they got to do was feed the Lorikeets. They were very hungry and were quite happy to sit and eat from the hands of Sain and Gabriel. The food they were eating was a sweet milky mixture.

On Tuesday I went to the Butterfly Creek with Room 21. I enjoyed going to the farm and I saw a rabbit and a dog. I enjoyed patting the dog and rabbit. I learnt that some butterflies are poisonous and that butterflies cover their wings to make themselves warm.

Today YouthTown came to our school to teach us how to do new sports. They taught us new skills on the rugby field and it was cool.
First we played a game of Cat and Mouse. One team had to be the cats and the other team had to be the mouse. When I was the mouse Kalwinder was the cat and I didn’t get caught. When I was the cat I didn’t catch anyone.
The next game was learning how to skip forwards, backward and sideways. It was easy for me and the others in my group. I think the girls were better than the boys.
After this we played a different kind of cat and mouse but this time it was better. We learning to exercise our body and get fit at the same time as having FUN!
We had to go around the cones and step over them. It was kind of hard.
I was really excited when I was with YouthTown because they taught us cool things.

Yesterday Kelvin Road School held their annual Swimming Sports at Massey Park Pools. It was great fun and we were quite lucky becasue it was not too hot.

Whaea Elaine was the starter. She was really good at it. I do not think she needed the horn to start the races because she has a strong voice anyway.

Tomorrow, some of the swimmers will be going to the interschool competition. They have been practising for a while at lunchtimes so I think they will do really well. Good luck team!

School Council

This is the School Council for 2010. They were voted for by the other Year 6 pupils and their teachers. There are 12 of them. There were 13 but Mr McMillan thought that was unlucky so the 13th person (who does not know who they are) is the first reserve just in case someone leaves, (I guess the number 13 was unlucky for that person).

The School Council will be leaders in the school by being positive role models and helping their peers and teachers. It can be a tough job.

These are our librarians for 2010. They have a very important job in the school becasue at Kelvin Road School, we LOVE our library.

The students will work hard with Mr Naidoo making sure that the books are all in the correct place and the library is well prepared for borrowers.

You can ask the librarians to help you if you are stuck. If you need a game at lunchtime, these are the people who will get it for you.

At Last! Room 23 has Sunflowers!

They have been on the go for some time but at long last Room 23’s sunflowers have flowered. They are not quite the giants of the forest that we all expected but after a pretty start rough to life (being thrown around by vandals when they were just seedlings) they have done pretty well. I have named this one Walter because it reminds me of him. Good luck Walter, grow tall and strong just like the sunflowers from the Homework Centre.

What I Enjoyed About 2009

What I liked about 2009

Room 23 and I spend awesome times together this year. We did lots of things in class so we could learn heaps more at school.

This year Room 23 and I did puppets. I liked doing the sewing on the ginger bread man but it wasn’t easy, it was hard work. We made them out of different materials. It’s okay because I managed to make one.

We’re doing drama now. This is one of the good times. Drama is when we act and play and drama is one of my best things but not my favourite.

We also did dance too this year and it was so cool because we did a dance off with Room 18. I was pretty shy but I did a dance in front of them, even though they were laughing at us.

Another one of my greatest times with Room 23 was the train trip. My big Sister Sonia came on the train trip with us. We had a clipboard with worksheets on them. I didn’t manage to spell the platform names but I told Sonia to help me spell them.

My favourite sport of the year is high jump. High jump is so cool but when I started I wasn’t good but Mrs. Dunbar taught me how to jump over. She told me to jump over the edge so I don’t fall off and then I started to get so good now. I can jump over the bar.

Another one of my great times I’ve had was the tents day. My group’s tent didn’t stay up but we put it together with team work. We even had lunch in them. Whaea Elaine came and decided which tent she liked. She liked Tui’s team and Gemini’s team tent. I had a good time there.

My favourite day in 2009 was Sammy day. I didn’t like the way mushrooms look but at least I tasted them. They were yummy! The reason I liked that day was because we got to eat healthy.

I really enjoyed being in Room 23 this year.

The Year 6 children went to Waiwera yesterday. After a cramped bus ride, it was great to get out and into the water. Whaea Elaine got wet.....although, that was because it was raining. Viliamu was so happy that he started dancing......at least we hope he was dancing! Jyris went speeding down the slide....he eventually opened his eyes.

Overall, great fun was had by everyone.

Art Exhibition 2009

Last week, Kelvin Road School held its annual Art Exhibition. All the classes contributed to the show and loved seeing their art work on display. Parents and other friends of the school came in to view the displays. The teachers have been saving the best art all year waiting for this opportunity to share it with everyone.

The pupils at Kelvin Road School were asked about their favourite part of 2009. Angelique from Room 23 thought long and hard about it and decided her favourite part, (apart from her teacher), was doing Drama. She liked doing acting, posing and facial expressions. She even demonstrated some to me - they were great.

Angelique, I promise there will be drama next year as well!

How caterpillars metamorphosis’ into a caterpillar

Caterpillars are in all countries and will always metamorphosis into a butterfly. First the butterfly lays eggs on a leaf. Then the caterpillar hatches out of the egg and eats the shell.
Next the caterpillar looks for about thirty leaves to eat and then the caterpillar gets fatter and fatter. Then it molts out of its skin about four times.

Then it looks for a leaf to hang upside down on.

After it finds a leaf it shoots out silk thread and ties it around itself and makes a chrysalis.
Then the chrysalis turns into pupa. Pupa is a kind of jelly. Then the caterpillar grows wings.
At last the butterfly comes out of the chrysalis it hangs upside down and flaps its wings so blood can go into its wings. And the Cycle can start again.

The caterpillar to butterfly happens all the time and this is why it is a cycle.

A Story From the Papakura Courier

EVERY PENNY COUNTS: Students from Kelvin Road School’s Maori bilingual unit created a coin trail poster for children in Samoa.

Instead of writing stories about what they did in the holidays students in Kelvin Road School’s Maori bilingual unit asked if they could use the time to do something for children in Samoa affected by the tsunami. After a brainstorming session they decided to make a coin trail poster and send it to Samoa. Teacher Rachael Taylor says a lot of the children had seen coverage of the tsunami on the news and really wanted to do something to help.

So they spent three days asking friends, teachers and parents for any spare change – be it 10 cents or $2. With the help of kaiawhina (teacher aide) Ripeka Croft they also created a giant poster filled with bright images of Samoa – from an umu to coconut trees and jandals – and heartfelt messages of support. After sticking the $60 in coins down the poster weighed as much as a hard-backed dictionary. Mrs Taylor says the children really enjoyed making the poster and wanted to take it to Samoa themselves.

Failing that they hope the money is used to buy schoolchildren pens, pencils, rulers and rubbers.
In a note the class has attached to the bottom of the poster they write: "We want to give something special back to the children as we are fortunate enough to have a classroom with lots of resources and equipment."

Mrs Taylor hopes the Red Cross will be able to get the poster to Samoa on behalf of the school and the youngsters who created it.

The holidays were great.....unfortunately, when Xavier and Rawiri returned their beautiful sunflowers were not looking too flash. After all the boys' work, the snails came along and munched on the plants leaving just the stalks. We put down snail bait which the snails also seemed to enjoy. They went all frothy and died. We might try again in the same spot and hopefully we can have better success. Room 23 has some sunflowers as well......maybe they want to plant some in our now empty plot?

Today Kelvin Road School celebrated being the 50th school to become a Red Cross Breakfast Club school. We had a lot of guests and some of us performed for the guests. One of our guests was Mrs Collins, our MP, plus Mr Penrose, our Mayor. As with all celebrations there was a cake. Robert and Te Kawehau helped cutting that up.

Our breakfast club is on Monday and Thursday mornings and Mr Robertson said that since it started, our attendance for those two days has improved a lot.

Breakfast is a really important meal and we must have it every day....even if it is at school.

Sunflower Planting

During the last week of the term we planted our sunflowers outside. The weather was pretty bad and they got bashed around a bit in the afternoon but they should be OK. We planted them in 3 different places.

Position 1: Ariana / Lacy / Logan – this spot is behind Room 19. It is not an overly visible spot, but it is well protected from the weather and near a tap to make it easier to water them.

Position 2: Rawiri / Xavier – this spot in outside the PE shed. This spot is a great position to catch the sun and is really visible. It is a bit risky because a stray bouncing ball may hit the growing sunflowers.

Position 3: Te Aomihia / Frances – this is a good spot in the new garden outside Room 14. Hopefully we can use the fence to tie up the sunflowers when they get really big. These plants should be safe from bouncing balls.
