Kelvin Road School Drum to their own Beat

Our Senior Drum Show.

Our whole School took part in The Drum Show. We listened to Johnny, the performer and followed his beats. I was tapping so hard on the drums, my hands and fingers got red and sore. The beats were very cool. We split into three teams and Mr O’Brien went up on stage. I was in Mr O’Brien’s team. All the three groups were tapping different beats at the same time. I was so excited, I love drumming.

Can you see me?  I am in the middle.

Bob Bickerton Show

4.4.2012

Bob Bickerton

On Friday 30th of March Room 23 and I, also the other classes of the senior school went into the hall to watch Bob Bickerton present his show. It was so cool.

The very first thing we did was walk to the hall, when we got there we sat down and he started to introduce himself in Māori and when he finished his intro in Māori he started to play some of his instruments and tell us where he got them from. The harp was the sound of love when he played it. Wouldn’t you just like to be Bob Bickerton? I would love to be Bob Bickerton. After that he told us that he is going to tell us a true story with his own made up characters and his own words. The first thing he did before telling the story is ask two questions. What do people want from the whale? I put up my hand but he picked Jalisha and he said oil and that was correct. The second question was what are they going to do with the oil and I quickly put up my hand to answer the question and do you know want the answer was? It was the light. So he started to tell the story…
During the story he asked some students to come up and act. The funniest part was when he asked 3 students and 4 teachers to come up and show how the dance goes. When they came up he asked Miss Taffard to dance with him and she said sure. I had to dance with Mrs. Long.
After the story he said you to KELVILYON and said you marry her and he marries Siota but it was actually a joke to teach us about arranged marriages. After the show we went back to our own classroom for lunch. The Bob Bickerton show was awesome!

Metaphors, Similes and Personification

Tuesday 3rd April 2012

Simile, metaphor and personification

We are learning to describe things using similes, metaphors and personification.
Have you ever heard of a simile? Here I will tell you. A simile is when you use ‘like’ or ‘as’ in a sentence to compare something to another. We use them to make your writing interesting and to put a picture in our reader’s head.

Example: the sun is hot like boiling water ready to make your tea.

Here is another idea that you can use for your story, it is called a metaphor. Have you ever heard of a Metaphor before? If you haven’t I will explain. A Metaphor is kinder like a simile but you don’t use ‘like’ or ‘as’ and a Metaphor is stronger than a simile.

Example: He was a monkey climbing the tree.

Personification is my favourite.  Personification is when you bring an object that’s not human alive; you are actually giving human traits to them.

Example: the dice stared at me when I rolled it.

A Star is Born

This term, we would like to welcome Starsim Simeki (Star). He has taken on the very important role of social worker (SWIS) at Kelvin Road School.
Star receives a poster for his room from Lovishare and Rachel of Room 23

I asked him why he came to Kelvin Road School and he said "If you have any problems at home or in school you can come and see me." Star also runs the school's holiday programmes and supports students to concentrate at school. He told me he had an office next to the Rainbow Reading office in room 20, whereby students can come and talk to him. We made him a sign to help him decorate his office and tell others where he is. Billie-Jean
Star has made many new friends at Kelvin Road School.
